The issue is not being able to buy gift cards, but being able to gift books. You used to be able to select a book and instead of clicking "Buy Now", click "Send as Gift" and have the book appear in a different Kobo account. I see it mentioned on the thread you point out, but no real answer. I was wondering if they were doing away with it due to geographic restrictions. One of the things you could do with it was have someone in the UK gift a book to a US account even though the book isn't available in the US (or is sold by a different publisher in the US).
