Another Newbie.

Hi, All! I'm from New Hampshire, and I've only read a handful of books since high school. (I know--lame.) Nearly forty years later, I finally have some free time, and I'm looking for book recommendations and maybe some people to discuss them with.

I used to read a lot of Anne McCaffrey--loved the Rowan series and the Pern books. And I did read all the Harry Potter books as well as a bit of Michael Swanwick.

But I'm also leaning toward mystery and suspense, as long as it's not too dark and too graphic/gory. I'm drawn to great characters and yummy writing, but I also want a decent plot, and a bit of humor never hurts. I'll admit, though, that if I'm not hooked pretty darn close to page one, I'll likely stop reading.

I'm curious about the book clubs here, and looking forward to maybe discussing the next book of the month? It looks as if a June book has not yet been chosen--do I have that right?

Thank you in advance for pointers toward books or authors I might enjoy. I need to make up for lost time.
