OK. I did the fill using the filldisk tool Peter sent me. It took 25 minutes, but it did fill the disk. I checked by attempting to load a book into main memory using calibre and got a disk full message. I also got a "could not communicate with device" error when calibre attempted to do its update of metadata etc.

I uploaded the book onto the sd card. It got there, but it is not seen by the Aura as being on device when I do a search, or look at the library in "books". It is on the SD card. I then tried to download a book that had been archived, from the device over WiFi. The book did not go the queue or download. I had hoped that when the Aura itself decided to place a book on the SD card it might go there. Nope.

It sure looks like some things with the Aura are just different than earlier readers. I guess we won't know how different until the two driver developers have them to play with (or Kobo tells us more)

EDIT: Removing the fill made the book on the SD card show in "Books", be findable through search. No covers on the home page (which was the initial concern that started off this process).
