Hm. If you simply want to install apps not in the B&N store, you don't need root to do that anymore. Root comes with several irritations that may or may not be worth dealing with for you, notably the random reboots.
If you really and truly want to root it, my suggestion is to take a few weeks and re-read the posts several times. They're very dense and have a lot of information there, so treat it like an assignment or work policy - you need to remember and understand this. It took me about 3 weeks of re-reading threads in XDA and running through the process in head, and then another week of trying the process and then I finally got root. Oh, and the most important thing - buy a Sandisk SD card. Seriously, don't bother with any other brand.
