I should have qualified that to read 'they respect 'teachers other than the one currently teaching their child...' Teachers are addressed as XYZ-sensei rather than XYZ-san. Same with medical doctors and dentists. Even socially, they are addressed as such. (The one currently teaching their child is called incompetent-san.)
