Well, I removed the enclosing <div> from each chapter, and all the classless spans from paragraphs. Now the big file is just over 200K uncompressed, and I still have that unexpected page break - in a different place, although possibly the same number of bytes from the start.
So I'm inclined to think there's a bug in the Sony T1 software.
