It seems measuring size is a nontrivial task for ePub. Absent standard metadata, which ePub does not seem to have, you need to count words by interating through the files and stripping out tags. That's hard enough. To get page count for a chapter, I imagine you have to actually lay out the chapter? Doing that for the entire book will be sloooowwww.
