Ah, this sounds plausible. I don't know the technicalities. What I do know is that sometimes when I'm reading a book, I accidentally touch something and the devices skips many, many pages/chapters. I'm a little ashamed to say that I still don't know what exactly I did to cause this to happen. But when it did happen, touching the back button would take me back to the page I was reading. However recently, I can't seem to go back to my last page when I accidentally skip chapters or whatever. Does the hyperlink theory make sense here? Also, I've never connected the device to wifi or anything so that is out of question.
