It's not just before long paragraphs, it's in the middle of a long paragraph and for a couple of authors who seem to love very long paragraphs, a couple of breaks in a paragraph. Modifying Adobe's Reader Mobile to remove this and a couple of its other display bugs would, as you said, improve the reading experience.
