As for the comments "if you don't want the new functionality, don't upgrade the firmware", do you really think this is a viable alternative. I can see how this plays out...

User Jane has a problem so they contact customer support and gets customer support specialist Dick:

Jane: Hi I'm having a problem with my reader.
Dick: Hi Jane, I'm sorry you are experiencing a problem, I'll be glad to help you today.
Dick: Would you please perform a factory reset.
Dick: Jane are you still there?
Jane: Yes, I'm still here. I'm modifying the database so the firmware won't upgrade.
Dick: Could you hold on I minute, I need to look into this.
Jane: Dick, are you there?
Dick: Yes, I'm still here. I'm looking into this matter. Please be patient.
Dick: Ok, I researched this and editing the database is not supported.
Jane: Then that means I will get the annoying margins at the top.
Dick: That is correct.
Jane: Can I delete the update files then?
Dick: Could you hold on I minute, I need to look into this.
Jane: Dick, are you there?
Dick: Yes, I'm still here. I'm looking into this matter. Please be patient.
Dick: I'm sorry, but deleting the update files is not supported.
Jane: But then I'll get the annoying header.
Dick: That is correct.
Jane: But I want this bug fixed, and I don't want the headers.
Dick: I'm sorry, but you will need to upgrade to the latest firmware before I can help you.
Jane: But the users at mobileread said to stop whinging and manually install an earlier firmware and modify the database so I would have the functionality I paid for and wanted and did a lot of reading on and was very happy with.
Dick: I'm sorry, but what you are doing is not supported.
Jane: Well, I really need the bug fix, so I guess I need to do the factory reset.
Dick: Are you still there?
Jane: Yes, I'm doing the factory reset.
Dick: Are you still there?
Jane: Yes it is still resting, how long is this supposed to take?
Dick: It should take 5-10 minutes.
... 20 minutes later
Dick: Are you still there?
Jane: Yes, it is still reseting.
Dick: It must be stuck reseting. A small number of people experience a problem reseting. It must be a small number, otherwise you would be hearing about it at mobileread, because not that many people have complained about it, and only the people who have problems complain.
Jane: What?
Dick: Pleas reset using a paperclip. Do you know how to do this?
Jane: Good one. All Kobo owners are paperclip resetting experts.
Jane: Ok. The factory reset is complete. I'm still having the problem.
Dick: Ok. I now need you to log out and log back in.
Jane: Wasn't the factory reset supposed to solve the problem.
Dick: Yes, but It didn't so I need you to log out and log back in. I'm sorry for the inconvenience.
Jane: OK, I signed out and signed back in. I still have the problem.
Dick: At this time I'll need to escalate this to tier 2 support. Can I help you with anything else today.
Jane: No thank you.
Dick: A quick survey will popup when you disconnect, it would be a big help if you could fill it out.
Jane: whatever.

Anyone want to do the Tier 2 support?
