Here's a good, short hard-boiled detective story by David X Manners that originaly appeared in Ten Detective Aces, in 1942.

Here's a quote about David X Manners:

"Among his books were the mysteries "Dead to the World" and "Memory of a Scream," as well as "The Complete Book of Home Workshops" and "The Great Tool Emporium." His short stories included "Killer's Keeper," which later became the basis of a Humphrey Bogart film, "Conflict." He and his older brother, the late William Manners, also wrote and hosted a "solve the mystery" radio show on WNEW in New York City called, "Isn't it a Crime," in the 1940s."
