The sort is more or less normal. One firmware version would sort by series when you selected sort by title but that bug/feature has disappeared. When sorting by Author, the next sort criteria is Title.
For myself, I use Sigil to edit the book title internal to the epub:

which gives me the series/title sort. Above is simplified version of what I see when displaying by Author in library view.
