Feeling really stupid because i've been wrestling with this for five weeks.

Would really appreciate some help
beleive me, i sympathise !! i too had some rather hair-pulling-out experiences at first. also, i have to apologise : i was thinking of mobi2imp, and the script you want has a slightly different name. BUT never fear !

the ebookwise dedicated forum is here :
https://www.mobileread.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=152

inside there is a LOT of great information. concerning your specific query about converting a LIT format book, there is a sticky called "Convert .lit directly into .IMP formats" which i suspect may be of interest to you. read the instructions and install the scripts (it's easier than it sounds, i promise, and if you get stuck, post a message on that thread and nick (nrapallo, the creator of the tool) will help you out ; he's the imp god around here. after that, go to this thread and follow the instructions there (this will optimise the conversion app. it's probably not completely necessary but i recommend it. again, if you get stuck, leave a message).

don't despair : you'll soon see that after getting through it once or twice you'll be able to do it with your eyes closed. (especially since once you've set it up, converting a lit file means putting it in the appropriate folder and double clicking it, and then waiting while the program does the work. done.)

good news too, nick is planning to make a GUI (Graphical User Interface) for this app which will make it less intimidating for non-techies ! but it's perfectly useable as is.

good luck !
