I've just done tests on a Touch using 0.9.28 of calibre, and 1.2.7 of the KoboTouchExtended driver.
Using
KoboTouch driver:
	Code:
	Book in Calibre
Title: A Spell for Chameleon
Series: Xanth
Series Index:1
Device Sent to: Touch
Plugboard: ePub:KOBOTOUCH {series:re(([^\s])[^\s]+(\s|$),\1)}{series_index:0>2s| - | - }{title} title
Save template: {author_sort}/{series}{series_index:0>2s| - | - }{title}
Location on Touch: \Anthony, Piers\Xanth - 01 - Spell for Chameleon, A.epub
After initial disconnect
Piers Anthony
X - 01 - A Spell for Chameleon
After second disconnect
Piers Anthony
X - 01 - A Spell for Chameleon
Xanth - 1
 Using
KoboTouchExtended driver:
	Code:
	Book in Calibre
Title: The Source of Magic
Series: Xanth
Series Index:2
Device Sent to: Touch
Plugboard: ePub:KOBOTOUCHEXTENDED {series:re(([^\s])[^\s]+(\s|$),\1)}{series_index:0>2s| - | - }{title} title
Save template: {author_sort}/{series}{series_index:0>2s| - | - }{title}
Location on Touch: \Anthony, Piers\Xanth - 02 - Source of Magic, The.kepub.epub
After initial disconnect
Piers Anthony
X - 02 - The Source of Magic
After second disconnect
Piers Anthony
X - 02 - The Source of Magic
Xanth - 2
 So unless there is a major difference in the Aura f/w, it should work exactly the same as the Touch does with regards to plugboards.
