UPDATE: I was able to get it to be recognized. Turns out the Kubrick instructions are not completely accurate, at least in the case where your Kindle has a constant amber LED. The DOWN button needs to be held down BEFORE the Power button.

Procedure:

Press and hold Down, press and hold Power. The amber light should turn off after about 15 seconds. Release Power, then release Down. You are now in USB recovery mode.
