The novel which kept popping in and out of various Kindle versions was not
Cain. That book was titled
All the Names.
Looking at the ToC of my Kindle edition of
The Collected Novels of Jose Saramago, I can see that
Cain is definitely
not included. Are you perhaps thinking of the
The Cave, which is?
