Yes, this is a legitimate issue, and part of me feels like I'm cheating when listening to an audiobook. It really isn't reading. I wouldn't rely on an audiobook for anything I needed to truly absorb and understand; I retain information much better when I see the words. But for my choice of material--old favorites revisited, familiar classics, mystery and suspense--listening while doing something else works just fine.
