En rik, nylig hjemvendt svensk utvandrer blir funnet skutt på sitt hotellrom i Göteborg. Tilsynelatende er det selvmord, men når det oppdages at hans verdipapirer er borte, mistenkes hans vakre unge enke for å ha tatt ham av dage. Heldigvis er dr. Wrangel overbevist om hennes uskyld, og setter hele sin kriminalistiske erfaring inn på å få oppklart mysteriet.
