No way to detach it that I can see. I can however hold the cover between my pinky and ring fingers so that I can then keep 3 fingers on the ridged back and my thumb on the bezel and use my thumb to page forward.

The way the cover is made I think it would work for lefties as well, I haven't tired putting it on that way but does look like it would work fine with the hinged side of the cover on the right side rather than the left side.
Edit: on second thought, it won't work that way because the center crease on the back is not in the center from top to bottom.
