'Ralph The Heir' is a compelling tale of property, illegitimacy & inheritance.
We follow the fortunes of the young, charming, but ultimately weak Ralph Newton, who as the legal heir to his uncle's property is the means by which the illegitimate but much-loved son of squire Gregory Newton, also named Ralph, is prevented from inheriting his father's estate. Successive attempts are made to enable his son to inherit, but the untimely death of the Squire means that the illegitimate Ralph can no longer harbour any hopes of claiming his birthright. At the same time a rivalry is growing between the two cousins for the hand of a lady.
The depth and power of this novel lies in its twists and turns, from the touching depiction of the love between father and son, to the contested Parliamentary election that reflects Trollope's own failure at the Beverley by-election.
