In 2012, they were ranked fourth for corporate profit, right behind Apple. And, as previously noted, last quarter profits are up 17 percent. Suppose that Windows 8 was Windows 7, just faster, more stable, and secure by default. The press would be even worse, with the mantra that Microsoft had given up on the future.

Microsoft cannot ensure its future. No company can, and certainly not a tech company.

* I'd say, though, that so long as they are treating their employees well, and paying their legal taxes, it's not really an obscene amount, just a high amount.
