There are a lot of those anecdotes. One of the best known is that it "Takes 10.000 hours of practice to become good at anything you do".
10.000 hours is 250 work weeks. That is about 6 years of full time work, or 12 years in 20 hours a week part time.
If it really takes 10.000 hours just to be merely "acceptable" or "good" at something, most people won't be good at anything except their daily job. Most people don't have the time to spend 20 hours a week on a hobby, and if they do, they often don't have the inclination.
If you'd say that it takes 10.000 hours to become a master, or expert, then I'd believe that.
