Maybe the redesign is more intuitive than you give it credit: after clicking on your link the top of my screen was filled with "Books to help you cope".

Functional downgrades aside, at least Boston decided to go with a "clean" background... my local library (Fort Worth) decided to go with a background image of the state flower. It looks nice - as long as all the books you are looking at are blue.
