Hi chexmix,
have you tried to change the usb cable (maybe yours is faulty) and even Apple charger (maybe it does not have enough current [A] ).
And to load the reader to the wall charger (24 hours (+ or -) because if the battery is empty, it takes a long time to load in full)

It is not good practice to fully discharge the battery li-ion, it is best to charge it often, even a little.
