Maybe in Australia, but warranties in the US are usually between the manufacturer and the original purchaser only.

However, some manufacturers will honor a warranty if an item is accompanied by the original receipt, or a copy thereof. I suspect this is more to prove that the item was actually purchased somewhere rather than being stolen merchandise. How that would work out with Kobo where they have the original owner's registration information, is anyone's guess. But it never hurts to try.
