You don't need an unlocked smartphone to get the same specs and feature set as a Galaxy Player. I paid $220 for my new Samsung Galaxy SII Skyrocket. For all intents and purposes it is a SGP4/5.

Many stores are carrying prepaid Android smartphones that don't require a contract and don't need to be activated. The prices are within range of the regular SGP prices.
