Many of the codes came from the recent Kobo contest "Guess the Character Trivia Contest".
As with many of their contests it's one question a day with 4 possible answers listed. You can select answers until you get it right. Each day you are then awarded a random prize; normally a code for between 10 and 75% off a book.
There are also grand prizes; I think this time it was an eReader.
And of course, you can enter from multiple eMail addresses...
