Filename format for input control

I've spent the past 45 minutes searching for this so either it has not been asked or else (more likely) I am using the wrong words to describe what I am trying to do.

What is the preferred format for the filename in order, when inputting the book into Calibre, the author name and title and other information go into the correct heading?

For example, after some experimentation, I found that if I rename the book on my computer as book_title - author , then the information goes correctly into Calibre. What I am trying to do is figure out how to add some more information, like series and number. I have tried different combinations but nothing is working. Suggestions?
