Can't get author sort right

Hi, I hope someone can help me: I'm going crazy here! My books are correctly sorted by author LN in Calibre, but when I look on my Kindle, they're sorted by author FN for no reason I can understand.

More info below:

I have a random mishmash of books; some from Amazon, some from elsewhere. Some of my books had miscapitalisations in the titles, some had the series name in the title, some had authors as LN, FN instead of FN LN, some books were correctly listed as FN LN but were incorrectly sorted under the author's first name.. it was a mess.

So, I downloaded Calibre, and changed the metadata for all my books - approximately 1000 titles. It didn't work at first (I don't know why) and I just ended up with double copies of incorrectly-named books.

Today, after a lot of fiddling, I have all the books listed exactly how I want them. The only problem now is that all my books on my Kindle are listed alphabetically by author first name!

In Calibre, I have the author field set to FN LN and the author sort set to LN, FN. I have tried putting the author sort to FN LN but that doesn't change anything on my Kindle. I really, really hate seeing books listed as LN, FN so I don't want to change the author field - and I shouldn't have to, because before I messed around with Calibre most of my books were listed as FN LN but sorted by LN, which is exactly how I wanted it.

What did I do wrong? How can I fix it?
