But I remembered one that I used back when I worked in a private boarding school, when we were having a problem with someone breaking into office drawers.
I bought some Gentian Violet crystals at a drug store/supply house. With a mortar and pestle, ground the crystals into a fine powder, then sprinkled the powder onto a wallet that a teacher had ostentatiously filled with a fake wad of money ( real bills on the outside and paper inside) and put into a drawer. When we came back the next day, the drawer was open and the fake bank roll thrown on the floor.
As a powder, Gentian Violet is a pale white. When sprinkled on a canvas wallet it's hardly noticeable. But when most novice crooks are thieving, especially when breaking into a school office at night, they tend to be nervous. And nervous hand tend to sweat. And moisture + Gentian Violet powder = a brilliant BLUE dye that can't be washed off. All we had to do was look at hands during breakfast to know who was ripping off the school.
