Assuming the very worst: you could try to flash it clean again.
K3flasher and Kubrick both aim to simplify that task.
That would Rule Out "corrupted files".. but I have read at least 10+ reports of this "my kindle 3 just starts to freeze" so perhaps it is a manufacturing issue. I myself had one that did just that - which I sent back. Amazon did not quibble. I have no idea if it is still in warranty. If it is I would send it back immediately.
