And to do that I'd need the credit card number I no longer have? But maybe I'm wrong about what's required. I guess the point is that I'd have to learn how to do that if my Nook broke, and Nooks weren't being made anymore, and I wanted to read my books on a Kobo or something.

I'm pretty sure it goes by the CURRENT credit card on the account, not the one used at the time the book was ordered. As long as you've updated your jnfo, you will be fine.
