You seem to be using libraries several steps beyond those a standard leading edge Ubuntu install provides. QT4 for instance is a 4.3.4 for Ubuntu 8.04 which is current. And by current I'm sure you realize Ubuntu 8.04 isn't like old Debian stable - years behind current packages.

I'm thinking that rather than breaking my system with installs outside my package manager (apt) I might be better off with a VM for calibre development. Would a Debian unstable install provide the correct environment?
