Apologies for slightly de-railing this thread, but you're talking about the technical aspect here. I'm talking about what the licence terms you've agreed to mean, according to the people who wrote them.

I asked Kobo specifically "May I let my spouse read ebooks that I have bought (on a device authorised to my Adobe ID)?"

They said "Legally, only the account holder has license to use the material".
