I already have a Kindle touch and it is a great e-reader except for PDFs. I was also given a first gen Kindle DX bought in the US second hand, and it's much better for reading pdf, although this one is probably a little obsolete and text is not always sharp.
I am waiting for a kind of super DX, next gen so to speak. But I am tempted by the 8,9" although it's probably on the small side for me - it's difficlut to read the FT even on 9.7".
But the price is good, and if I can read PDF without eyesore, say 1 or 2h at a time, I think I 'll go for it. It's the ability to read without tiring my eyes that is critical. The rest is just added cream. I don't want to work, with this stuff, I don't want to communicate, I don't want to watch video etc. except occasionally.
