I've had the 7" and now an 8.9" - and the larger is way better, but it can depend on your usage.

For reading ebooks, I thought the 7" was better - more portable, lighter to hold for long periods, etc.

The larger is way better for everything else. It's a must if you read a lot of technical PDF books. It's way better for video and web browsing. It's a great size and very slim. Even so, it's a bit heavy to hold for reading for long periods, although not really heavier than many hardback books. But for that reason I find the Kindle Fire cover works great - you can prop it up quickly for reading or watching movies/TV. I actually didn't use my smaller one for movies that much, but I watch a lot of movies/TV on the larger one and its great for that.
