Odd page-jumps in Calibre-converted files?

I've got a large-ish number of books that originated from Ereader.com. I converted them to EPUB using Calibre, and loaded them onto my Nook Color. I did all that back before B&N decided to shut down Ereader and make the files available directly in my Nook library.

Trying to read one book recently, I ran into a problem where as I did a page forward, the page number at the bottom went to something much earlier in the book. Another page forward, and suddenly I was *on* that earlier page. The sequence was something like this:
Reading page 40
Swipe finger right-to-left to go to next page/paragraph
See next paragraph text, but bottom of page says '5'.
Swipe finger right-to-left to go to the next page
See text from page 6, and number at bottom says '6'.

When I pulled up the same book in Calibre and viewed it, I could flip through the book with no problem.

I tried updating my Calibre version and re-converting the book and that got me past the first glitch - but the same thing happened about 30 pages later in the book. I wound up having to go directly to the page after the troublemaker.

I've seen this happen with a handful of other files as well in the past.

So: I don't know if this is a Calibre bug, or something that the Nook sees in the Calbre-converted file that confuses it somehow.

Any suggestions for what I can do to tweak my EPUB file so that the Nook will quit misbehaving?
