This is the fourth of five Inspector Hanaud detective novels, generally accepted as not up to the standard of the first three. It is fairly rare.

It is in some respects a "caper" novel with detective elements.

The Hanaud detective novels, in order, are;

1932: They Wouldn't be Chessmen
1946: The House in Lordship Lane
