Best known for "The Four Feathers" (filmed many times) and the Hanaud detective novels, A E W Mason wrote many novels. This novel begins in Burma, where the protagonist is shopping for an emerald and is recruited to deal with a man-eating tiger terrorising the village, moves to London and the Bright Young Things of the 20s, almost Evelyn Waugh "Vile Bodies", and climaxes bloodily in a dark house in Avignon.
(It includes a guest appearance from Hanaud and Ricardo in one chapter, which in itself became a short story.)
