I tend to agree with the "recommendations" though. In a brightly lit room, or outside, the front light has to be turned up for the Kindle to still appear white (instead of gray). Conversely, at night in a completely dark room, high light settings will be disturbingly bright (to the point of being blinding), while low settings are easy on the eyes and still provide sufficient contrast to read.
