Solved
I should have fiddled a bit more before I posted.
I fixed it by
1. Formatting the internal memory through the advanced settings menu
2. This allowed me to run the universal flasher and selected choice 7
3. Which then allowed me to reflash with the firmware update
Everything is copacetic now. Wish I knew what happened so I could avoid it.
