Thank you for the comments and the explanations. This is much clearer and I agree the problem must come from my laptop, even if the triggering event is the plugging of one particular Kindle.

The remarks about the "BIOS device enumeration" and the power management help me to understand a little bit more the context of the problem, and why unplugging the power cord from the computer make the usb ports work again and allows access to the mouse.
