Yes, he sang and wrote songs. I first encountered him as a regular cartoonist for Playboy, with a wonderfully twisted view of the world. One clascic bit was a sequence titled "Shel Silverstein Among the Hippies", where Shel visits San Francisco in the days of LSD and free love, and documents what he sees.
