Thanks for the suggestion, Rascalina. In fact, I had already contacted Kindle Support before I posted my question here. I had a good experience with them a couple of years ago, when I broke the screen on my original Kindle, and got a replacement free of charge. However, in this case, the best offer they could make was a small discount on a refurbished Kindle Fire.
Still, it's always worth a try.
