Have you tried any Robert Goddard? The master of mysteries about hidden family secrets that surface later and have a huge impact on later generations. He does not write in series, though on a couple of occasions he does return to the same charcter. I would suggest trying something like In Pale Batallions and see what you think (please ignore the awful US cover).
