I don't know why, either, but I would:
1. Plug the Kindle into a wall outlet, for several hours or overnight, then
2. Slide and hold the slider switch until the Kindle reboots again. The manual says something like 15 seconds, but I've found that it can take up to 2 minutes, and sometimes requires more than one try.
