FWIW : I keep the latest 2 versions of my downloaded software on spinning data drive, with a replica on a 4GB thumb. Saves me a lot of hassle if I need to reinstall.

My experience is that the freeloaders almost always have some sort of opt-out, but they can be tricky to understand, and hard to find. I recently found one buried in the License Agreement that was displayed during the install.

And its not just download sites like CNET that peddle this rubbish, some well known so called 'open source' packages have also started feature bloat in their installs. They seem to prefer Bunndle to Open Candy, and my experience is that its much harder to eradicate Bunndle than it is Open Candy.
