I've done shorts from 500 words to 40, 000 words. I usually decide beforehand how many words I want to write. I've just finished a book of about 170,000 words. This was the first time I decided to keep writing and let the story decide how many words it wished to be. Short stories have to be tight. I have to consider almost every word.
