This is a short story by Raymond F. Jones, entitled "The Memory of Mars." (The cover art is representative only.)

Raymond F. Jones was a popular SF writer of the '40s and '50's (and also later). He has an easy-going style and wrote entertaining stories. One of his novels, "This Island Earth," was adapted into a film by Universal Studios.
