hee ! yes, i agree, what passes for html code can be pretty frightening sometimes ! given that you seem to feel pretty strongly about this (and rightly so ; i feel strongly about it too

) i encourage you to take a look at epub which should resolve many of the problems you find the most annoying. there is plenty of info around here ; you can create epub files by hand or using the feedbooks interface which soon will include a wysiwyg editor too. and there are plenty of people around to answer questions.
